Apulia / Puglia
Puglia (or Apulia as it is also called), is the boot heel of Italy and a food and wine lover’s paradise which produces one tenth of the wine drunk in Europe.
This area is one of Italy’s secrets with sun filled, brightly coloured flora, pastel painted villas, vineyards and just miles and miles of olive groves, the heel of Southern Italy pointing at Greece. Corfu is just a few hours away by boat. The close proximity of Greece reflects in the ambience and style of the towns, cities and villages.
The seas of Puglia, both the Adriatic and the Ionian are renowned for their crystal clear waters and wonderful beaches. One is never more than 30 miles from Puglia’s coastline dotted with its small towns and fishing villages, where fishermen mending their nets at the quayside are still an important part of the local way of life.
Travel through the Valle d’Itrea and see the numerous famous ‘trulli’, small conical roofed dwellings, dazzling whitewashed and all under the protection of UNESCO, and now the holiday homes of lucky owners, many from the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The capital of the region is Bari, but there are many other wonderful historic towns and villages to visit. One of which is Lecce, known as ‘The Florence of the South’, or another is Ostuni, known as the ‘White Town’, brilliant white in the daytime sun situated on the hillside, but softly lit by amber lights after the sun goes down. Gallipoli with its’ narrow medieval streets and fabulous early morning fish market is well worth a visit. Bari, Puglia’s capital with its historic centre is a must and a walk along the lovely sea front promenade seeing the fishermen at work is a delight. San Pietro in Bevagna is situated on the Ionion coast, just off the main road between Taranto and Gallipoli and south of Manduria.
Sea-food lovers will be in their element in Apulia.. a huge proportion of Italy’s fish is caught off the extensive Apulian coast, so it is available in abundance and at a better price than most other places in Europe.
